This course is designed to quickly provide you with the tools to keep your SQL databases accessible and healthy. Starting with installation tips and guidelines, the class guides you through the recommended best practices for SQL Server maintenance, data management tasks, index strategies, system monitoring and troubleshooting. These are advanced techniques required of all SQL Database Administrators. 

Pre-requisites

  • Beginning SQL Server 
  • Structured Query Language: (T-SQL): Level 2 or equivalent 

Syllabus

Lesson 1: Install SQL Server instances and features 

  • Compare the different editions of SQL Server 2014 
  • Use the various functions of the SQL Server Installation Center 
  • Install a new SQL Server named instance 
  • Use SQL Server Configuration Manager and SQL Server Management Studio to complete installation 
  • Validate the successful installation of the new named instance 
  • Customize the SQL Server instance and databases hosted on it 
  • Create clustered, non-clustered and column store indexes 

Lesson 2: Manage SQL Server maintenance tasks to keep systems healthy 

  • Create new maintenance plans using Maintenance Plan Wizard 
  • Modify maintenance plans using Maintenance Plan Designer 
  • Maintain indexes using options like REBUILD, REORGANIZE and ONLINE 
  • View the maintenance plan execution history 
  • Create SQL Server Agent jobs using SQL Server Management Studio 
  • Modify SQL Server Agent jobs using SQL Server Management Studio 
  • View the SQL Server Agent job execution history 
  • Use Central Management Server to manage a multi-server environment 
  • Implement Policy-Based Management for system maintenance 

Lesson 3: Perform data movement tasks 

  • Compare data movement options for various scenarios 
  • Set up log shipping for disaster recovery 
  • Monitor the status of log shipping 
  • Compare different types of SQL Server replication and select an appropriate type for a particular scenario 
  • Install SQL Server Replication Publisher, Distributor and Subscriber 
  • Conduct various types of database backup and develop a routine backup strategy 

Lesson 4: Implement monitoring and troubleshooting techniques to prevent system failures that can be foreseen and quickly resolve those that cannot 

  • Use the Windows operating systems tools, such as System Monitor, Performance Logs and Alerts and Task Manager, for monitoring and troubleshooting 
  • Use SQL Server Management Studio Activity Monitor to monitor and manage the database activities 
  • Configure Extended Events for system monitoring 
  • Utilize Dynamic Management Views and Functions for monitoring and troubleshooting 
  • Use SQL Server Database Console Commands (DBCC) for database maintenance and troubleshooting 
  • Configure SQL Server Resource Governor to avoid overloading a system 
  • Use Management Data Warehouse for extended system monitoring 

Lesson 5: Conduct High Availability and Disaster Recovery tasks to increase database dependability 

  • Compare different SQL Server High Availability technologies 
  • Compare various SQL Server Disaster Recovery options 
  • Use the Always-On features for High Availability and Disaster Recovery 
  • Restore databases from backups for different scenarios 
  • Conduct disaster recovery using a log shipped database
