Learn how the security system works within SQL Server. Students will apply permissions ranging from individual items up to entire servers. Learn how to combine individual and role-based permissions to determine effective permissions to databases and database objects. Course topics include logins, users, roles, authentication modes, permissions, securables and linked servers.

  • Beginning SQL Server (using 2012) or equivalent knowledge

Lesson 1  

Combine principals, securables and permissions to implement core enterprise-level security Strategies 

  • Set upWindows security using principals,securables and permissions  
  • Set up and test new users with different permission-levels using both Management Studio and the Query Editor 
  • DDL commands 
  • Database context 

Lesson 2  

Integrate the security systems of SQL Server and Windows into one security plan 

  • Set up Security at the SQL Server level
  • Integrate SQL Server-level principals with database-level security
  • Implement object-level security within a SQL database
  • Group securable permission sets using schema-level security

Lesson 3  

Implement SQL Server Security roles 

  • Simplify login-based security at the server level by using fixed server roles 
  • Simplify SQL user-based security by using fixed database roles

Lesson 4  

Implement SQL Server Security roles 

  • Combine explicit permissions and role-based permissions to create the desired level of effective permissions

Combine and separate SQL Server authentication and Windows authentication 

  • Create non-Windows-based SQL logins and enable their use with the proper authentication mode
  • Map non-Windows-based SQL logins to database-level resources

Combine and separate SQL Server authentication and Windows authentication 

  • Setup database users with different default security schemas

Enable and configure the security features that allow you to run a query session against multiple SQL instances by setting up linked servers 

  • Setup linked servers to run remote and distributed queries 
  • Configure security options for linked servers
