Course description

In the final course in the Graphic Design Certificate Program, students will develop an online portfolio and cover the print production process. Discuss methods for preparing files and working with printers. Learn the basics for creating an online portfolio and developing a web presence. Present your online portfolio to the class.

Syllabus

Session 1  

  • Intro: define your goals 
  • Portfolios 101 – websites, number of projects needed, rules of the game, keys to success 

Session 1 Assignments 

  • Introductions 
  • Goal share: what do you want your portfolio to do for you? 
  • Great portfolios: what’s out there 
  • Homework: course reading. Pick portfolio template and have account ready to go. Gather project list and elements for project pages. Start personal bio. 

Session 2  

  • Creative critique: first pass at bios, portfolios and project narratives 

Session 2 Assignments 

  • Review projects and bios in any state 
  • Homework: course reading. Start or continue creating project pages and addressing project and bio feedback. 

Session 3  

  • Creative critique session 

Session 3 Assignments 

  • Share your portfolios 
  • Present final bios and ideas for personal brand mark. 
  • Homework: course reading; finalize bios, keep refining/adding projects 

Session 4  

  • Creative critique 
  • Elements of a successful in-person portfolio presentation 

Session 4 Assignments 

  • Lab class; share your portfolios 
  • Show refined brand 
  • Homework: course reading, finalization 

Session 5  

  • Print production overview  
  • Final class presentations
