  • Create materials including posters, CD/book covers and collateral materials to incorporate into your portfolio

Apply concepts learned in the Design Foundation series and tools learned in the Visual Designer series to create posters, CD/book covers and collateral materials to incorporate into your portfolio. Portfolio pieces will be developed through homework and in-class critiques. Refinement will occur throughout the course, and work on a computer outside of class is vital. 

Pre-requisites

  • Completion of Design Foundation and Visual Designer series or equivalent knowledge  

Syllabus

Session 1  

  • Offset printing and print-on-demand  
  • Monitor calibration  
  • Understand different types of printing  
  • Advantages and disadvantages in each system 

Session 1 Assignments 

  • Select three art works to print  
  • Download program to calibrate monitor  

Session 2  

  • Rendering intent  
  • Soft proofing 
  • Color settings in Photoshop/Illustrator/InDesign 

Session 2 Assignments 

  • Calibrate your system  
  • Print art work selected without any adjustments 

Session 3  

  • Print viewing  
  • Understand the difference in light temperature  
  • Printer options 

Session 3 Assignments 

  • View art work in different light conditions  
  • Print art work in different subtracts   

Session 4  

  • Use different subtracts for printing 
  • Use of UCR and GCR 
  • Preparation for printing from Photoshop  
  • Preparation for printing from InDesign 

Session 4 Assignments 

  • Develop your content 
  • Creation of different files using different types of black configuration 

Session 5  

  • Preparation for printing from Illustrator  
  • Preparation for printing form Acrobat  

Session 5 Assignments 

  • Time permitting, create three prints, different subtracts
