Project Resource Management

Learn a systematic method for applying techniques and identifying issues to avoid project failure.

What you’ll be able to do — competencies

  • Apply resource management within the Project Management Institute (PMI) PMBOK®Guide – Sixth Edition Process Groups (Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring and Controlling, and Closing)
  • Apply cost estimate and duration techniques for resource management
  • Compare the three key types of project management estimation phases (Rough Order of Magnitude, Budget Estimate, and Definitive Estimate) and how each type affects planning during the Determine Budget process
  • Use a Risk Register to identify resource risk triggers, develop the contingency reserve, make contract decisions, determine and make updates to project documentation, and identify constraints
  • Apply resource planning, allocation, and leveling to manage resource needs and make adjustments throughout a project’s life cycle
  • Determine the contract types, terminology, payment methods, and selection criteria to hire a seller for the project

This course provides a systematic method for applying techniques and identifying the issues that can result in cost overruns, delayed schedules or failure to meet performance standards. Course topics include resource identification, estimating techniques, and planning phases, which take place during project definition and planning, as well as risk triggers, performance issues and contract management, which take place during project Execution, Monitoring, Controlling and Closure.

Session 1

  • Apply resource management within the Project Management Institute (PMI) PMBOK®Guide – Sixth Edition Process Groups (Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring and Controlling, and Closing)
  • Explain how expectations and requirements have measurable effects on resources throughout the life cycle
  • Identify the key benefits of the Cost Management Plan
  • Identify the elements addressed in a resource management plan.
  • Develop a Resource Assignment Matrix (RAM) and a Responsible, Accountable, Consult & Inform (RACI) using the resource management plan and the Resource Breakdown Structure
  • Record issues in the issues log and modify the resource calendar
  • Communicate the trends and forecasting of project resource issues to stakeholders
  • Apply cost estimate and duration techniques for resource management
  • Create a Resource Breakdown Structure (RBS)

Session 2

  • Identify common project management estimating techniques
  • Describe the benefits of each estimating technique during the planning phase
  • Determine the effectiveness of the estimating techniques used to perform the steps in the Determine Budget process
  • Use cost aggregation to determine the project funding requirements
  • Use the risk register to identify resource risk triggers, develop the contingency reserve, make contract decisions, determine and make updates to project documentation, and identify constraints
  • Use the risk register to identify resource triggers and develop a contingency reserve for uncertainties
  • Execute risk-related contract decisions
  • Determine all the appropriate project management plan updates
  • Update the Assumption log and Technical documentation based on risk response identified in the risk register
  • Identify resource requirement constraints
  • Apply resource planning, allocation, and leveling to manage resource needs and make adjustments throughout a project’s life cycle
  • Identify resources needed from the project’s activities list and attributes
  • Determine make-and-buy decisions for the project activities

Session 3

  • Use Earned Value Management formulas and the Performance Report to spot trends, forecast potential problems, and identify issues that have been resolved
  • Use schedule network analysis to determine changes to the Project Network Diagram (PND) or schedule baseline
  • Determine the contract types, terminology, payment methods, and selection criteria to hire a seller for the project
  • Describe the tools and techniques used to select sellers
  • Use a make or buy decision analysis to determine the best type of contract to use
  • Calculate the payment to a contractor on each of the different types of contracts
  • Explain the difference between a Request for Proposal and a quote
  • Create selection criteria for choosing sellers from submitted proposals
