RN – Theory Review

Nurses who would like a medical surgical nursing theory review may enroll in the “RN – Theory Review” portion of the RNR program. Theory only students do not participate in the clinical practice component of the program but do participate in the skills lab. Students enrolling for this option must submit an application and state “theory only” disregarding the clinical site preference section of the application form. There is a $60 non-refundable application fee and tuition is $1,305. Additional BC online/tech fees apply per academic quarter. Note: This program is not considered a refresher program by the Nursing Commission or by prospective employers.

Fees are due in three payment installments for the five-month program. You may pay fees by check, Discover, Visa, or MasterCard.

Is there a required textbook?

Medical Surgical Nursing Assessment and Management of Clinical Problems, 10th Edition, Lewis, Bucher, Keitkemper, Harding, ISBN: 978-0-323-32852-4, List Price: $170.00

You may purchase either the one big book or two smaller books Vol. I & 2

What are the enrollment requirements?

RN License

To participate in clinical practice, nurses must have an active Washington State Registered Nurse License or a Washington State Limited Education License (LEL). The LEL is granted by the State to a registered nurse with a lapsed or expired license. It allows the nurse to practice as an RN for the activities of a refresher program but is not legal for employment. The LEL is granted for a period of 180 days. Apply to the Nursing Commission for the LEL 4-6 weeks before the start of the program so that it does not expire before the end of the program. Please call the Nursing Commission at (360) 236-4700 for any questions about your license.

Program Orientation

A student handbook and documents including: program calendar, clinical on-boarding instructions, and distance education information will emailed to each enrolled student approximately 3 weeks prior to the start of the program. All enrolled applicants will be notified via email regarding program updates. Additional Orientation Q&A will take place on the first workshop day of the program.

Email and Technology

You must have a working email account to participate in the program. Please be sure you know how to open attachments as calendar updates and other information will come in this format. Enrollment confirmation and program information will be sent by email. If you have not received a message by 10 days after submitting your application, please call (425) 564-2012 to verify your email address. Sometimes the problem is a spam blocker at your end that won’t accept the message from BC.

Reliable computer and printer are required, in addition to reliable internet access for online portion of the program. Students will be required to use CANVAS and use their Bellevue College email – to be set-up after acceptance into the program (please note that CANVAS is separate from your Bellevue College email).

What if I have a suspended license?

RN’s who have a suspended license (this section not applicable to RN’s with an inactive or active license) will not be admitted into the program, unless they have found a suitable clinical and preceptorship site on their own, prior to the application deadline. Bellevue College is not responsible for finding a clinical/preceptorship site for RN’s with a suspended license.

Are there requirements for the clinical/preceptorship sites?

Clinical/Preceptorship sites must:

  • Be pre-approved by the RN Refresher Director and/or Associate Dean of Nursing
  • Be verifiable as a viable clinical/preceptorship site for RN Refresher student
  • Fully cooperate with the Bellevue College RN Refresher Program Clinical Coordinator(s) and Instructor(s)
  • Please include Contact Name and Information to Bellevue College RN Refresher Program

All paperwork regarding this process must be completed, signed, and approved prior to the application deadline, so it is highly recommended that the RN start this process immediately.

What are the details around clinical onboarding?

These prerequisites for clinical placement are based on requirements established by Washington State law, college regulations, and individual agency regulations. The college and the program reserve the right to amend or add requirements as needed.

HIV/AIDS Education: All Washington State Registered Nurses are required to complete seven hours of authorized HIV/AIDS education. If you have an active RN license, you have completed this education some time in your past and don’t need to do anything. For nurses who have LEL, a copy of the certificate documenting this education should be submitted to the clinical coordinator prior to clinical practice. To find an HIV/AIDS education course, please go to the Washington State Department of Health website for available courses.

National Background Check: All students complete the National background check to review records for history of child/adult abuse conviction. This check is required for all clinical practice sites. The background check is processed through CastleBranch and must be completed by the first day of the program. The fee for this check is included in the program fee.

Immunization Requirements: All students must have a completed Clinical Passport on file and provide Clinical Onboarding Student/Instructor Information prior to any clinical practice. You must have documentation of current immunizations or a positive titer.

Please Note: Two immunization requirements may take additional time to complete:

  1. Tuberculin Status requires an initial 2-step skin test AND a repeated 2-step skin test for confirmation administered within 1 to 3 weeks.
  2. Hepatitis B is comprised of a series of 3 vaccines completed at appropriate time intervals AND post vaccination titer at 6-8 weeks after series completion. This process can take upwards of 6 months to accomplish. If you have not yet begun the series, please complete at least the first 2 vaccines OR a positive Titer by the first day of the program.
