What you’ll be able to do — competencies
- Identify the basic concepts and terminology related to computer networking, including the OSI model, TCP/IP protocol suite, and network topologies.
- Operate Cisco routers and switches using the command-line interface (CLI) and graphical user interfaces (GUIs).
- Use the principles of network security, including access control lists (ACLs), firewalls, and virtual private networks (VPNs).
- Design and implement basic local area networks (LANs) and wide area networks (WANs).
- Manipulate various LAN switching technologies, such as VLANs, trunking, and inter-VLAN routing.
- Infer strategies to pass the Cisco CCNA certification exam.
Course Description
This course provides students with the knowledge and skills required to install, configure, operate, and troubleshoot medium-size routes and switched networks. Topics covered include network fundamentals, network access, IP connectivity, IP services, security fundamentals, automation, and programmability. Students will gain experience configuring Cisco routers and switches, implementing IP addressing services, virtual LANs, and inter-VLAN routing through hands-on lab work using Cisco equipment and simulation tools. Upon successful completion, students will be prepared to take the Cisco CCNA certification exam.

- User-level skills on personal computers.

Instructor: Joseph Mayes
Joe Mayes has more than 30 years of IT and cybersecurity experience, both as an engineer and an instructor. He has created courses for the US Federal government, as a tenured faculty member at the college level, and as a professor at Carnegie Mellon University. Joe Has been a certified Cisco instructor since 1998, and a Cisco Learning Partner instructor since 2008. Joe holds multiple Cisco certifications as well as Microsoft MCSE and MCT.
Notes
This course will include doing lab assignments and examinations outside of assigned classroom hours. Students should dedicate 20 hours of work after each week of classes.
